ನನಗೊಂದು ಸಂದೇಹ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ (ಬಹುತೇಕವಾಗಿ ಕನ್ನಡ ವಿಕಿಯಲ್ಲಿ) europe ಅನ್ನು ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲೂ ಯೂರೋಪ್ ಎಂದು ಬರೆಯುವ ರೂಢಿ ಇದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಯೂರೋಪ್‌ಗೆ ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಐರೋಪ ಎಂದು ಹೆಸರಲ್ಲವೆ? ಅಥವ ನನ್ನ ಮಾಹಿತಿ ಸುಳ್ಳೆ. ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಯಾರಾದರೂ ಇದರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮಾಹಿತಿ ನೀಡುತ್ತೀರ?

ಆದರೆ ಯುರೋಪಿಯನ್ ಮೂಲ ಪದ ಉಪಯೋಗಿಸುವಾಗ ಇದು ಕಷ್ಟಕರ ಕಾರ್ಯನೀತಿ. ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಶ್ ಅಲ್ಲದ ಯುರೋಪಿಯನ್ ಪದಗಳು ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಶ್‍ನಲ್ಲಿ ಬೇರೆಯೇ ಆಗಿ ಬರೆಯಲ್ಪಡುತ್ತವೆ ಹಾಗು ಉಚ್ಚರಿಸಲ್ಪಡುತ್ತವೆ. ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗೆ ಫ್ರಾನ್ಸ್ ರಾಜಧಾನಿಯಾದ "ಪಾರಿ" ಅನ್ನು ಫ್ರೆಂಚ್ ಜನ "ಪಾರಿ" ಎಂದು ಕರೆದರೆ,ಆಂಗ್ಲರು "ಪ್ಯಾರಿಸ್" ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ.

• ujjain - ಉಜ್ಜೈನಿ
• Delhi - ದಿಲ್ಲಿ
• bengal - ಬಂಗಾಳ

ಮತ್ತು: china - ಚೀನ
ಈ ರೀತಿಯಾಗಿ ಹಲವು ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗಳಿವೆ. ಈ ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕನ್ನಡದ ಪದ ಬಳಸುವುದಾದರೆ ಇಲ್ಲೂ ಕನ್ನಡದ ಪದ ಬಳಸುವುದು ಉತ್ತಮವೆಂದು ನನ್ನ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ. ಇಲ್ಲದಿದ್ದರೆ ಕಡೇಪಕ್ಷ ಆಯಾಪುಟದಲ್ಲಿ ವಿವರಣೆ ಕೊಡೂವಾಗ ಈ ರೀತಿಯಾಗೂ ಕರೆಯಲಾಗುವುದು ಎಂದು ಬರೆಯಬಹುದು. --ಅರುಣ ಪ್ರಕಾಶ ೨೩:೦೨, ೧೨ January ೨೦೦೭ (UTC)

ಒಂದು ಮಾತು: ಐರೋಪ ಮತ್ತು ಐರೋಪ್ಯ ಎಂಬ ಪದಗಳು ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಳಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿವೆ ನಿಜ. ಅದೇ ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇನ್ನೂ ಅನೇಕ ಪದಗಳು ನಮಗೆ ಲಭಿಸುತ್ತವೆ. ಅಂತಹ ಪದಗಳನ್ನು ಖಂಡಿತವಾಗಿಯೂ ನಾವಿಲ್ಲಿ ಬಳಸಬಹುದು. ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ಅವುಗಳನ್ನು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ತಮ್ಮ ಶಾಲೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕಲಿತಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಆ ಪದಗಳ ಬಳಕೆ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಚಾಲ್ತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇವೆ. ಆದರೆ ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೊಸ ಕನ್ನಡೇತರ ನಾಮಪದಗಳನ್ನು ಅನುವಾದಿಸಿ ಬಳಸುವುದರಿಂದ ಅವುಗಳ ಉಪಯೋಗವಾಗಲೀ, ಬಳಕೆಯಾಗಲೀ ಆಗುವ ಸಂಭವ ತೀರಾ ಕಮ್ಮಿ. ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಗಣಕ ಯಂತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ದೊರೆಯುವ ಮಾಹಿತಿಗಳು ಗಣಕ ಯಂತ್ರದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಪರಿಣಿತಿಯಿರುವ ಲೇಖಕರು ಮತ್ತು ಸಾಹಿತಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಉಪಯುಕ್ತವಾಗುತ್ತವೆಯೇ ಹೊರತು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯರಿಗಲ್ಲ. ಹಾಗೂ ಇವರುಗಳು ಅಂತಹ ಮಾಹಿತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಕನ್ನಡಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಆಂಗ್ಲ ಭಾಷೆಯಿಂದಲೇ ಪಡೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ನಾವಿಲ್ಲಿ ಯೋಚಿಸಬೇಕಾಗಿರುವುದು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಓದುಗರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮಾತ್ರ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಲಭ್ಯವಾಗುವ ಮಾಹಿತಿಗಳು ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ಉಪಯುಕ್ತವಾಗುವಂತಿರಬೇಕಾದರೆ ಅವು ಆದಷ್ಟೂ ಸರಳವಾಗಿರಬೇಕು. ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ತಿಳಿದಿರುವಂತಹ ಪದಗಳ ಬಳಕೆಯಾಗಿರಬೇಕು. ಅವು ಆಂಗ್ಲ ಪದಗಳ ನೇರ ಕನ್ನಡ ಪದವಾಗಿದ್ದರೂ ಚಿಂತೆಯಿಲ್ಲ. ಆಗ ನಮ್ಮ ಮಾಹಿತಿಗಳು ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ತಲುಪುತ್ತವೆ. ಆದರೆ ಈ ಓದುಗರಿಂದ ಕನ್ನಡ ಬೆಳೆಯುತ್ತದೆಯೆಂದು ಯೋಚಿಸುವುದು ಮೂರ್ಖತನವಾದೀತು. ಇದು ನನ್ನ ಚಿಂತನೆಯಷ್ಟೆ.

The 2008 Board election committee announces the 2008 election process. Wikimedians will have the opportunity to elect one candidate from the Wikimedia community to serve as a representative on the Board of Trustees. The successful candidate will serve a one-year term, ending in July 2009.

Candidates may nominate themselves for election between May 8 and May 22, and the voting will occur between 1 June and 21 June. For more information on the voting and candidate requirements, see <http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Board_elections/2008>.

The voting system to be used in this election has not yet been confirmed, however voting will be by secret ballot, and confidentiality will be strictly maintained.

Votes will again be cast and counted on a server owned by an independent, neutral third party, Software in the Public Interest (SPI). SPI will hold cryptographic keys and be responsible for tallying the votes and providing final vote counts to the Election Committee. SPI provided excellent help during the 2007 elections.

Global bots

Hello. The standard bot policy was updated to allow global bots, which are now technically possible. These are trusted bots that will be given bot access on all wikis that allow global bots (the local policy or request page must explicitly allow them, or they won't get access on this wiki). The current requirements for global bots are:

• the bot must only maintain interlanguage links or fix double-redirects;
• the bot must already be active on several wikis, with long-term contributions to back up its trustworthiness.

The LocalisationUpdate extension has gone live

The LocalisationUpdate extension is now enabled for all Wikimedia projects. From now on new localisations that become available in SVN will become available to your project within 24 hours. Your localisations get into SVN from translatewiki.net typically within a day and at worst in two days. This is a huge improvement from the old practice where the localisations became available with new software. This could take weeks, even months.

The localisations done by our community at translatewiki.net are committed to SVN typically every day. When the system messages in English are the same as the local messages, they will now be inserted in a file and are available for use in all our projects in a timely manner

What this means for you

Local messages have an impact on the performance of our system. It is best when messages are as much as possible part of the system messages. In order to remove unnecessary duplication, all the messages that have a local localisation and are exactly the same as the system message will be removed. What we ask you to do is to compare and proof read the messages in translatewiki.net and the local messages. You can then either remove local messages when the translatewiki.net message is to be preferred or, you can update the message at translatewiki.net.

Messages that are specific to your project will have to stay as they are. You do want to check if the format and the variables of the message are still the same.

Why localise at translatewiki.net

When you localise at translatewiki.net, your messages will be used in all Wikimedia projects and eventually in all MediaWiki based projects. This is how we provide the standard support for your language. When messages change, at translatewiki.net you will be prompted to revisit your translations. Localising is more efficient because we have innovated the process to make you more efficient; there is text explaining about messages and we have applied AJAX technology to reduce the number of clicks you have to make.

How can we improve the usability for your language

We expect that with the implementation of LocalisationUpdate the usability of MediaWiki for your language will improve. We are now ready to look at other aspects of usability for your language as well. There are two questions we would like you to answer: Are there issues with the new functionality of the Usability Initiative Does MediaWiki support your language properly

The best way to answer the first question is to visit the translatewiki.net. Change the language to your language, select the “vector” skin and add the advanced tool bar in in the preferences and check out the new functionality. And make some changes in your user page. When there is a need to improve on the localisation, please make the necessary changess . It should update your localisation straight away. We would like you to report each issue individually at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Usability_issues .

When there are problems with the support of MediaWiki for your language, we really want to know about this. It is best to report each issue separately. In this way there will be no large mass of issues to resolve but we can address each issue on its own. Consider issues with the display of characters, the presentation of your script, the position of the side bar, the combination of text with other languages, scripts. It is best to try this in an environment like the prototype wiki as it provides you with a clean, basic and up to date environment. The prototype wiki is available for five languages but you can select any of them, change the preferences to your language and test out MediaWiki for your language.

We would like you to report each issue individually at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Language_issues . The issues you raise will all be assessed. It is important to keep each issue separate, because this will make it easier to understand the issues and find solutions.

As you may have heard, as part of this process the Foundation has decided to experiment with making short-term investments to put staff on the ground and help grow readership and participation across the Wikimedia projects and languages in a few high-priority places. The idea of this pilot program is to determine what works, and what doesn't, and document those findings. India is one of the places that is being considered, and we would appreciate any help in understanding the following:

1. What has the Indian Wikimedia Community done in the past year to increase readership and participation?
2. What plans do the Indian Wikimedia Community have to continue to work on increasing readership and participation?
3. What are the greatest challenges the Indian Wikimedia Community faces in increasing readership and participation?
4. How could the Foundation help?
5. If the Foundation were to put staff on the ground in India, where would it make the most sense for them to be located?

2010 Fundraising Is Almost Here

Hello Wikipedians, I am Dan Rosenthal and I am working for the Wikimedia Foundation during the 2010 Fundraiser. My job is to be the liaison between your community and the Foundation. This year's fundraiser is intended to be a collaborative and global effort; we recognize that banner messages which may perform well in the United States don't necessarily translate well, or appeal to international audiences.

I'm contacting you as I am currently looking for translators who are willing to contribuದte to this project by helping translate and localize messages into different languages and suggesting messages that would appeal to your readers on the Fundraising Meta Page. We've started the setup on meta for both banner submission, statistical analysis, and grouping volunteers together.

Call for image filter referendum

The Wikimedia Foundation, at the direction of the Board of Trustees, will be holding a vote to determine whether members of the community support the creation and usage of an opt-in personal image filter, which would allow readers to voluntarily screen particular types of images strictly for their own account.

Language support group for Kannada

The Wikimedia Foundation has brought together a new team of developers who are dedicated to language support. This team is to support all the languages and consequently it is not realistic to expect that the team members can provide proper support for your language. It is for this reason that we are looking for volunteers who will make up a language support team.

This language support team will be asked to provide us with information about their language. Such information may need to be provided either to us or on a website that we will indicate to you. Another activity will be to test software that will likely have an effect on the running of the MediaWiki software. We are looking for people who clearly identify their ability. Formal knowledge is definitely appreciated.

Greetings from the Tamil Wiki Community, We are orgainising a Media Contest for images/videos/audios related to Tamil, Tamils and Tamil Nadu. Since we share a common heritage we believe our Kannadiga comrades will have a lot of files relevant to the contest criteria.

Looking at a website, only to be presented with little squares is the result of a computer not having the fonts necessary to show the characters used for a language. There is a modern method of providing people with a missing font; this is done by sending a font together with the text that is to be displayed.

The Localisation team of the Wikimedia Foundation is working hard to finish the WebFonts functionality. This will serve you with freely licensed fonts when these fonts are not present on your system. For regular users, there will be multiple fonts to choose from or to select none at all.

At translatewiki.net, we run the latest version of the WebFonts software at all times. This allows you to get familiar with the look and feel and follow its progress. To make it easy for you, we will copy the text of the article on your language from your wiki to the Portal:Kn/Webfonts page at translatewiki. The fonts that we use are the best Freely Licensed fonts we can find. For the Indic languages this is typically the Lohit font that is used in many Linux distributions.

The agenda of the localisation team is that WebFonts will go live on Monday December 12. At the India hackathon we learned about issues with some of the fonts and several issues we were able to resolve and others resulted in the filing of bugs at Red Hat. We are looking into having a triage meeting with Red Hat engineers to assess and address any and all issues.

When there are real issues that prevent the reading of the text, we may consider to postpone the WebFonts implementation for a particular language. We are open to technical solutions that improve the usability or acceptance. Apart from that, Wikipedia exist to bring information to everybody and WebFonts allows us to increase out audience.

Building Kannada wikipedia and Kannada Wiki community

Dear Kannada wikipedians,

Over the past few weeks I have discussed the current state and the future of Indic wiki projects with many Indic language wikipedians - and few Kannada wikipedians have helped me get a richer understanding of Kannada community and projects. And after discussuion with more than 10 Indic wiki communities, I have provided the summary of discussions and my ideas about taking Indic wiki projects forward here. During the discussion many of you have asked for clear ideas to improve the strength of the community and quality of projects. I have been thinking about what would be most appropriate for Kannada community and I want to share some specific suggestions for Kannada wikipedia. I am recommending these based on ideas from Kannada editors as well as learnings from other Indic communities which have relevance for Kannada.

As of now we have around 10 active wikipedians and close to 11,000 articles for Kannada wikipedia. I think the single most powerful way of achieving the huge potential for for Kannada wiki projects is to build its community. Increase communication and collaboration between editors is one way of doing this since that will retain existing editors and attract more users to for Kannada wiki. Kannada community may consider working on more frequent interaction (online and face-to-face), increasing the spirit of common purpose and bonding amongst editors and last, but not least, attracting newbies.

Below are some points that I request Kannada wiki community to consider.

Community Building

Wiki meetups

Physical meetings between wikipedians is a really strong way to help the growth of Indic wikipedias. As you know meetups connect us with like-minded people, build friendships, help share ideas and plan initiatives. For small communities, there is always the feeling that we are all alone - and meetups help to correct this perception and this is a source of inspiration. We should have meetups of Kannada wikipedians anywhere and everywhere in the world where there 2-3 of you in the same town. In the NCR area (Delhi/Gurgaon/Noida/Faridabad), please feel free to use the office in Hauz Khas for meetups. I am not sure whether there is any Kannada wikipedian in the NCR area. If there is please let me know so that we can meet up and try to build a Kannada wiki community in Delhi also. For other areas please plan and meetup. Physical meetings between wikipedians is very much required to grow a healthy wiki community in any indic langauge wikipedia. I will help in every possible way to support all the initiatives regarding this.

WikiProjects

As most of you know WikiProjects are informal groups of wiki editors who work work together as a team to improve Wikipedia. These groups often focus on a specific topic area (for example, articles related to Kannada language or a interest area like Kannada movies or regional politics or Kannada literature or global topics like medicine) or a specific kind of task (for example, expanding stub articles). It allows editors to work with other editors - all of whom share a passion for the subject or task. It has worked really well in many languages across India. (For example, Oriya wikipeida has a project on "Oriya Literature", “Ollywood" and so on. Group of 2 or 3 Oriya wiki community members interested in these projects are actively collabrating on these articles to enhance it.). The idea I want to emphasis is, along with working on articles on our interest it will be nice if we could start collabrating with other community members. That will enhance our wiki editing experince and is good for the growth of community. That will help more existing users to continue in wiki for a long time.

Some suggestions for wiki projects are:

• Start a wiki project to create/expand all articles related to Kannada language
• Start a wiki project to create/expand articles about districts/villages of Karnataka and other states of India.
• Start a wiki project to expand the stubs
• Start a wiki project to identify and remove potential copyright violated images and move the rest of the free images to commons
• Start a project on an area which 2-3 editors feel passionate about - whatever the subject might be.

In fact if we could get to know the interest of users we could easily design various small wiki projects as is happening in English wikipedia. The point I want to emphasis is that collaboration between editors will ensure a healthy community so that we can do more programs. The best way of collaboration is doing what we all love best - editing. So let us collaborate on what we love doing most.

Outreach

To encourage users to start editing in wiki some of us need to take initiative for some outreach activities. Outreach can be of 3 types - offline, online, and using media.

Offline Outreach: Wiki workshops

Wiki workshop is the best way to attract more users to wikipedia. As we know the current 10 active editors in Kannada wiki is a very very small tiny group considering the fact that we have more than 10,000 articles to take care. We should start doing more workshops to attract more users to wiki editing. Again in Delhi, we have the required space and infrastructure so please feel free to use it whenever Kannada wikipedians require it. For other locations if any one is interested to conduct wiki workshops please let us all know and we will work out some way of supporting for this. More important is community members need to come forward.

Online Outreach: Social Networking

Use social networking sites to reach out to people (Facebook, Twitter, and many others.) You can publicise your workshops through these sites or you can invite people to join the community or you can announce major achievements (like the exceiting stories about Kannada wiktionary, Kannada wikipedia crossing the 25,000 article count, and so on). Already many Indic wiki communities are doing this. We shall think about start using Social Networking sites effectively for Kannada wiki projects also.

Online Outreach:Kannada Blogs

Use Kannada blogs to reach out to the Kannada online community. It would be very useful to get in touch with popular bloggers and ask them to inform their readers about Kannada Wikipedia and other wiki projects, encourage more people to consider editing and point interested people

Kannada Newspapers & TV Channels

Kannada newspapers and TV channels have mass outreach among Kannada people. Can we establish contacts with journalists and ask for their support in covering Kannada Wikipedia. Journalists alway look for news items that are directly relevant to their audience and something like Kannada Wikipedia crossing 25,000 articles is a perfect story. Any further achievement of Kannada community like when you cross the 100 active editor mark, and the 500 editor mark, when you do an offline release etc. - will all get you good media coverage. This will help in building the community, increasing motivation of existing editors and attract new editors.

Can I request as many Kannada wikipedians to share you thoughts about these ideas. Do you think they are the right ideas for Kannada? If so and if not, why? Would you suggest any alternate ideas? If you like these ideas, which ones would you like to work on? Is there any help you need? Would you be interested in getting connected to other community members who might also be interested? Please share your ideas.

The reason I am asking everyone to participate is it will help us all as a community to identify people who have similar interests and to start interacting and working closely on these interests. The ideal outcome of this post is for the community to start planning some of these activities as a group. There are two ways of doing this. One is, if community members start discussing on this page and form groups interested in particular ideas. Announcing Wikipedia 1.19 beta

Wikimedia Foundation is getting ready to push out 1.19 to all the WMF-hosted wikis. As we finish wrapping up our code review, you can test the new version right now on beta.wmflabs.org. For more information, please read the release notes or the start of the final announcement.

The following are the areas that you will probably be most interested in:

• Faster loading of javascript files makes dependency tracking more important.
• New common*.css files usable by skins instead of having to copy piles of generic styles from MonoBook or Vector's css.
• The default user signature now contains a talk link in addition to the user link.
• Searching blocked usernames in block log is now clearer.
• Better timezone recognition in user preferences.
• Improved diff readability for colorblind people.
• The interwiki links table can now be accessed also when the interwiki cache is used (used in the API and the Interwiki extension).
• More gender support (for instance in logs and user lists).
• Language converter improved, e.g. it now works depending on the page content language.
• Time and number-formatting magic words also now depend on the page content language.
• Bidirectional support further improved after 1.18.

Report any problems on the labs beta wiki and we'll work to address them before they software is released to the production wikis.

Medicine project

Dear All

I am writing to share with you a very inspiring initiative regarding health and medicine articles on Wikipedia. Crores of Wikipedia (English) readers read up about health related issues either when they or their loved ones fall ill or before or after they have consulted doctors or when they are curious about a particular disease or drug. In fact, quite a few doctors and nurses also read up these articles to improve their knowledge.

Wikipedia's medical articles have 15-20 crore page views every month. The top 300 articles are viewed more than 1 lakh times every month. The challenge is that the majority of these articles are only available in English.

This initiative (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Medicine/Translation_task_force) has been conceptualised by WikiProject Medicine, Wikimedia Canada and very interesting organisation called Translators Without Borders. It seeks to translate a set of 80 of the most important health care articles into as many languages as possible.

Given the state of our health care system as well as the increasing readership of Indic language projects, there is huge positive impact that we can have if we participate in this initiative and have these articles in all Indic languages. The project page (referenced above) includes an outline of the project, FAQs, useful links and a sign up for interested volunteers.

Kannada Wikipedians can join this effort by creating a wikiproject for this in Kannada wikipedia. Remember, you don't have to be a health care professional to help out. All you have to do is simply care.

I am really happy to inform you that few Indic languages have already signed up for this wonderful project. Of these, 3 languages - Assamese, Tamil, and Malayalam - have already started wiki project and started working on articles (really big comprehensive articles) related to Medicine.

Updates from India Program Team

This is the first post from the India Program team regarding the team. I have been posting updates on the various mailing lists - but am acutely aware that the majority of our community is on village pumps or project pages and hence this post. Do excuse me for posting something which is not solely focused on this project, but the work we are doing has learnings that you might find useful for your project. Here are 5 important links that you might find useful

• Here is your India Program team. Feel free to reach out for any help or to provide any suggestion - or just to say hello!
• I submitted the following mid-year report to the community on January 15th 2011 - outlining the activities for 2011 and the priorities for 2012. Strictly speaking, this wasn't a mid-year report because it covered all of 2011, but going forward, I intend to make it a half-yearly affair. Please add your comments or suggestions here, or below this post.
• I have recently started monthly updates. The monthly update for February is available here. Please add your comments or suggestion here. The areas of emphasis for March are here. Please add your comments or here. This is really useful for us to ensure that we are doing what you need most.
• I have also started a new tab on the India Program page for Learnings, called Gyan. I think it is going to be a pretty cool place for us to put together a whole host of learnings, lessons, heartbreaks, Eureka moments and inspirations - gathered from all over the community. Stay tuned for more!
• One of the essential things that India Program needs to constantly work out is keeping our community informed of the work that we are doing - so that this work is clearer but also to help cross-pollinate ideas amongst a wider set of community members who might not have been engaged on specific village pump / talk page discussion or involved in particular activities (e.g. outreach events) or wikiprojects. I propose to have a fortnightly IRC for the community with India Program. (For those who are not familiar with IRC, it is an Internet messaging system similar to a regular chat room. It's very simple to use and you can join in by clicking on the following link. This would be done on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of every month at 9pm IST (which is GMT + 0530) - THOUGH NOT THIS MONTH - BECAUSE I HAVE MISSED THE TIMELINE. Just for March, we will do it on March 15th and March 29th (both at 9pm IST which is GMT + 0530). I suggest that these chats are focused on specific work streams. As with many community meet-ups - folks will give time to attend a meet-up or participate in an IRC only if there is a topic of relevance to them. Therefore, we will do one IRC on Indic languages and one on Outreach & Communications. The March 15th one will be focused on Indic Languages and the one on March 29th will be on Outreach & Communications. (All IRCs will start with a re-cap of India Programs activities.) There is quite a bit of overlap on these topics - so feel free to join both. Please do also invite anyone who is interested to know more about India Program or - even more importantly - interact with fellow Wikimedians. As always, the logs will be put up on meta for the benefit of those who can't attend and for the record.

Narayam to be turned off by Default

New users are facing trouble while registering as Naramay allows them to type in Kannada by default. We should turn this off immediately. 1. Narayam is not intuitive enough for new users to know where to change the language. Only regular wikipedia users know that there is a way to directly type in Kannada. But this is affecting users registering. When they try registering the username, even that is being typed in Kannada. Its not a good usability option. They might not be well versed with typing in kannada as well. On creating a Community

As the outreach programs gather speed, I have a few suggestions:

1. There has to be a constant dialogue on wikipaedia among the editors. A good word for a well written / major edits, pointing out politely items for improvements, volunteering tech assistance etc.

2. Guiding new , enthusiastic editors who are not aware of the wikipaedia rules for writing articles ( No POVs etc).

3. When someone puts an opinion about an article/ a query / request for help or any anything on wikipaedia, it should be responded promptly. Currently this is glaring by its absence.

There are examples for each of these in the recent activities Sysops need to be watching the edits regularly and carryout above functions. This will help create bonding among the editors and more and more discussions may start happening. This will gradually build community. This may be debated during the next ಸಮ್ಮೇಳನ

Updates & Ideas from and for Indic Communities

Greetings all! I thought it would be useful to share the following updates from various Indic communities - which you might find interesting for the Kannada community.

• Odia community had a great weekend between March 30 and April 2 - including 3 outreach sessions and 1 community meetup. They shared a great report that includes lessons, solutions and next steps on outreach & community collaboration - which are applicable across many communities.

• Wikisource is seeing increased participation across communities and there is's a story that was shared about Gujarati community's Wikisource as well as an update from Shiju on a tool (DjVu) that will be useful to all Wiki librarians. If you are not familiar with Wikisource and want to know a little bit more, Amir Aharoni has written a basic introduction about it.

• Malayalam community is organizing the first Indic wiki conference ever - Sangamothsavam - on April 28-29 in Kollam, Kerala. They have very sweetly invited other Indic Wikimedians to attend, and we know that a couple of communities are going to be sending delegate - because they can take back ideas to their own communities.

• A couple of interesting Wikiprojects are active across different Indic communities. The medical project is up and running in Assamese, Bangla, Odia, Malayalam and Telugu. The Kannada community is working on a translation enhancement project

• India Program worked to several Indic communities on outreach, ideas for helping newbies, Wikiprojects as well as other technical support - and have prepared the following report for March. In April, the plan is to continue this support including Hindi editing at the Crafts Museum GLAM project as well as planning the 10th anniversaries of Nepali and Assamese.

• There are regular IRC meetings to discuss Indic languages, outreach and communication support that India Program provides. These are all logged here - and there are a couple of useful ones on how to establish and build Indic Wikisources as well as outreach, especially for Indic languages. (IRCs are conducted one 1st & 3rd Thursdays of every month at 9pm IST at #wikimedia-office. Please do join in; you'll find them very useful.)

Updates on Social Media pilot

Greetings! Here is a small update on the Social Media pilot supported by India Program. This pilot is running on two Facebook groups for Wikipedia activities: one in English (One is You can also write on Wikipedia) and one in Odia (Odia Wikipedia). Both of these are being piloted to see if we can explain the very basics of editing to new editors and to encourage them to make their first basic edits. This is done You can visit these groups to see the regular editing sessions that we are conducting there. So far, we have been able to get 30 first time editors in English and 10 in Odia - all of whom have completed a few basic tasks (like creating usernames, corrected mistakes, adding references, inter-wiki links!)

Facebook is a useful way of engaging with young users because they are more comfortable there. Here is a 19 point comprehensive guide that we've developed to illustrate the kind of language, nature of messages and way of interacting on Fb that you might find useful and can implement on your groups as well. Please note the mini-editing sessions we have devised with just 5 tasks to make the start of a new editor's Wiki journey really simple! Update on IPv6

The Wikimedia Foundation is planning to do limited testing of IPv6 on June 2-3. If there are not too many problems, we may fully enable IPv6 on World IPv6 day (June 6), and keep it enabled.

What this means for your project:

• At least on June 2-3, 2012, you may see a small number of edits from IPv6 addresses, which are in the form "2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334". See e.g. w:en:IPv6 address. These addresses should behave like any other IP address: You can leave messages on their talk pages; you can track their contributions; you can block them. (See the full version of this announcement for notes on range blocks.)

• In the mid term, some user scripts and tools will need to be adapted for IPv6.

• We suspect that IPv6 usage is going to be very low initially, meaning that abuse should be manageable, and we will assist in the monitoring of the situation.

Lessons on community building

Dear all, Assamese Wikipedia has seen phenomenal growth in the past one year. It currently has 31 active editors and 6 Wikiprojects (from 10 editors and no project in November 2011.) Their average monthly edits increased from 3000 in April 2011 to 5000 in November 2011. Congratulations, Assamese Community! India Program worked closely the Assamese community - and this work was part of Shiju's pilot focused on basic community building. There are several lessons for how small (and larger) communities can be built. It is worth reflecting on what inspired this progress, and to share these with all other communities.

Lessons

Strong communication: Like Shiju developed strong personal bonds with Assamese Wikipedians to guide them in their efforts, any community needs open communication, exchange of ideas and brainstorming to keep its projects going.
Initial push: Some of us are experienced editors and some might need help getting started. Shiju helped conduct the first two outreach sessions in Assam and this gave the community confidence to do more.
Encouraging collaboration: The basic idea of any Wikiproject is working together. A single editor can write many articles but a group of editors can manage a Wikiproject of hundreds of articles!
Building capacity and confidence: What started with basic support, translations and outreach advice by Shiju resulted in a wonderful 10th anniversary celebration where all editors themselves confidently put forth ideas to promote Assamese Wikipedia.
Healthy environment: Any organization, club or even a group of friends needs cooperation and productive inputs to progress. Like the Assamese Wikipedia family, young and old people from different walks of life who contribute selflessly to Wikipedia need that motivation to continue. Let's always strive to make it a pleasant experience.

While this update focuses on how the Assamese community has successfully woven together a bunch of great friendships, collaborations and figured a great way of working toegether, these learnings could help every community think about what they could also do, or do more of!. Presenting Chatasabha

New editors across Indic Wikipedias often face problems while editing for which need they help. However, most don't know where they can ask questions or get clarifications as they are usually unfamiliar with village pumps or mailing lists or even talk pages on basic editing. Many existing editors want to help new editors and could appreciate a central place where they can meet and help new editors. India Program has started a pilot to support the Odia community's help desk, Chatasabha. (Incidentally, "Chata" means student and "Sabha" means community, in Odia.) This pilot will build on the community's existing efforts - and seeks to provide a structured way of designing and running a Help Desk. It takes learnings from English Wikipedia's Tea House as well as other experiences on Help Desk and similar services.

The Help Desk that is being piloted is user friendly, has guidelines to provide simple answers to new editors and tries to manage the work load of existing community members by providing ready answers to frequently asked questions. The user friendliness of the Help Desk is in the form of being able to ask questions without getting stuck on Wiki markups as well as illustrated answers to some questions.

I have put a page on meta which has the pilot design. Eventually, we would like to help other Indic languages build similar Help Desks. Please do provide your feedback on the talk page.

Help decide about more than $10 million of Wikimedia donations in the coming year

As many of you are aware, the Wikimedia Board of Trustees recently initiated important changes in the way that money is being distributed within the Wikimedia movement. As part of this, a new community-led "Funds Dissemination Committee" (FDC) is currently being set up. Already in 2012-13, its recommendations will guide the decisions about the distribution of over 10 million US dollars among the Foundation, chapters and other eligible entities.

Now, seven capable, knowledgeable and trustworthy community members are sought to volunteer on the initial Funds Dissemination Committee. It is expected to take up its work in September. In addition, a community member is sought to be the Ombudsperson for the FDC process. If you are interested in joining the committee, read the call for volunteers. Nominations are planned to close on August 15.

GLAM Crafts Museum blog post

Dear all, Here's a blog post cum report on India's first GLAM initiative at the National Crafts Museum! The program started out in English but was taken forward in Hindi to suit the staff members who have been enthusiastically creating articles and editing in Hindi Wikipedia! The program has been a bold step to prove that GLAM can very well happen in India - with its own design and structure and it has also given the Hindi community a precious gift of 6 new editors.

A special thanks to User: Roboture who has been with us in each and every meet and helped train editors, User:Yann for his first set of invaluable Commons contributions and to User:Aniruddhajnu and User:Siddhartha Ghai for coming down to the museum to inspire the staff members.

Wikidata is getting close to a first roll-out

As some of you might already have heard Wikimedia Deutschland is working on a new Wikimedia project. It is called m:Wikidata. The goal of Wikidata is to become a central data repository for the Wikipedias, its sister projects and the world. In the future it will hold data like the number of inhabitants of a country, the date of birth of a famous person or the length of a river. These can then be used in all Wikimedia projects and outside of them.

The project is divided into three phases and "we are getting close to roll-out the first phase". The phases are:

1. language links in the Wikipedias (making it possible to store the links between the language editions of an article just once in Wikidata instead of in each linked article)
2. infoboxes (making it possible to store the data that is currently in infoboxes in one central place and share the data)
3. lists (making it possible to create lists and similar things based on queries to Wikidata so they update automatically when new data is added or modified)

It'd be great if you could join us, test the demo version, provide feedback and take part in the development of Wikidata. You can find all the relevant information including an FAQ and sign-up links for our on-wiki newsletter on the Wikidata page on Meta.

Fundraising localization: volunteers from outside the USA needed

Hello All,

The Wikimedia Foundation's Fundraising team have begun our 'User Experience' project, with the goal of understanding the donation experience in different countries outside the USA and enhancing the localization of our donation pages. I am searching for volunteers to spend 30 minutes on a Skype chat with me, reviewing their own country's donation pages. It will be done on a 'usability' format (I will ask you to read the text and go through the donation flow) and will be asking your feedback in the meanwhile.

The only pre-requisite is for the volunteer to actually live in the country and to have access to at least one donation method that we offer for that country (mainly credit/debit card, but also real-time banking like IDEAL, E-wallets, etc...) so we can do a live test and see if the donation goes through. All volunteers will be reimbursed of the donations that eventually succeed (and they will be low amounts, like 1-2 dollars)

I am Subhashish from Access To Knwledge, Centre for Internet and Society. There is a Wikipedia Workshop planned in NMAMIT, Karkala Taluk, Karnataka on 21st December at 1 pm and I will be organizing this event. Wikimedia sites to move to primary data center in Ashburn, Virginia. Read-only mode expected.

(Apologies if this message isn't in your language.) Next week, the Wikimedia Foundation will transition its main technical operations to a new data center in Ashburn, Virginia, USA. This is intended to improve the technical performance and reliability of all Wikimedia sites, including this wiki. There will be some times when the site will be in read-only mode, and there may be full outages; the current target windows for the migration are January 22nd, 23rd and 24th, 2013, from 17:00 to 01:00 UTC (see other timezones on timeanddate.com). Wikidata phase 1 (language links) coming to this Wikipedia

Wikidata has been in development for a few months now. It is now time for the roll-out of the first part of it on your Wikipedia. Phase 1 is the support for the management of language links. It is already being used on the Hungarian, Hebrew, Italian and English Wikipedias. The next step is to enable the extension on all other Wikipedias. We have currently planned this for March 6.

What is Wikidata?

Wikidata is a central place to store data that you can usually find in infoboxes. Think of it as something like Wikimedia Commons but for data (like the number of inhabitants of a country or the length of a river) instead of multimedia. The first part of this project (centralizing language links) is being rolled out now. The more fancy things will follow later.

What is going to happen?

Language links in the sidebar are going to come from Wikidata in addition to the ones in the wiki text. To edit them, scroll to the bottom of the language links, and click edit. You no longer need to maintain these links by hand in the wiki text of the article.

Where can I find more information and ask questions?

Editors on en:wp have created a great page with all the necessary information for editors and there is also an FAQ for this deployment. Please ask questions you might have on the FAQ’s discussion page.

Wikidata phase 1 (language links) live on this Wikipedia

As I annonced 2 weeks ago, Wikidata phase 1 (language links) has been deployed here today. Language links in the sidebar are coming from Wikidata in addition to the ones in the wiki text. To edit them, scroll to the bottom of the language links, and click edit. You no longer need to maintain these links by hand in the wiki text of the article.

Where can I find more information and ask questions? Editors on en:wp have created a great page with all the necessary information for editors and there is also an FAQ for this deployment. It'd be great if you could bring this to this wiki if that has not already happened. Please ask questions you might have on the FAQ’s discussion page.

Greetings. As you might have seen on the Wikimedia tech blog or the tech ambassadors list, a new functionality called "Lua" is being enabled on all Wikimedia sites today. Lua is a scripting language that enables you to write faster and more powerful MediaWiki templates.

Wikidata phase 2 (infoboxes) coming to this Wikipedia

A while ago the first phase of Wikidata was enabled on this Wikipedia. This means you are getting the language links in each article from Wikidata. It is soon time to enable the second phase of Wikidata (infoboxes) here. We have already done this on the [first 11 Wikipedias] (it, he, hu, ru, tr, uk, uz, hr, bs, sr, sh) and things are looking good. The next step is English Wikipedia. This is planned for April 8. If everything works out fine we will deploy on all remaining Wikipedias on April 10. I will update this part of the FAQ if there are any issues forcing us to change this date. I will also sent another note to this village pump once the deployment is finished.

What will happen once we have phase 2 enabled here? Once it is enabled in a few days you will be able to make use of the structured data that is available on Wikidata in your articles/infoboxes. It includes things like the symbol for a chemical element, the ISBN for a book or the top level domain of a country. (None of this will happen automatically. Someone will have to change the article or infobox template for this to happen!)

How will this work? There are two ways to access the data:

• Use a parser function like {{#property:p169}} in the wiki text of the article on Yahoo!. This will return “Marissa Mayer” as she is the chief executive officer of the company.
• For more complicated things you can use Lua. The documentation for this is here.

We are working on expanding the parser function so you can for example use {{#property:chief executive officer}} instead of {{#property:p169}}. The complete plan for this is here.

Where can I test this? You can already test it on test2.

Wikidata phase 2 (infoboxes) is here

A while ago the first phase of Wikidata was enabled on this Wikipedia. This means you are getting the language links in each article from Wikidata. We have now enabled the second phase of Wikidata (infoboxes) here. We have already done this on the [first 11 Wikipedias] (it, he, hu, ru, tr, uk, uz, hr, bs, sr, sh) a month ago and two days ago on the English Wikipedia. Today all the remaining Wikipedias followed.

What does having phase 2 enabled here mean? You are now able to make use of the structured data that is available on Wikidata in your articles/infoboxes. It includes things like the symbol for a chemical element, the ISBN for a book or the top level domain of a country. (None of this will happen automatically. Someone will have to change the article or infobox template for this to happen!) The current state is just the beginning though. It will be extended based on feedback we get from you now.

How will this work? There are two ways to access the data:

• Use a parser function like {{#property:p159}} in the wiki text of the article on Wikimedia Foundation. This will return “San Francisco” as that is the headquarter location of the non-profit.
• For more complicated things you can use Lua. The documentation for this is here.

We are working on expanding the parser function so you can for example use {{#property:headquarter location}} instead of {{#property:p159}}. The complete plan for this is here.

Where can I test this? You can test it on test2 if you don't want to do it in an article here.

[en] Change to section edit links

The default position of the "edit" link in page section headers is going to change soon. The "edit" link will be positioned adjacent to the page header text rather than floating opposite it.

Section edit links will be to the immediate right of section titles, instead of on the far right. If you're an editor of one of the wikis which already implemented this change, nothing will substantially change for you; however, scripts and gadgets depending on the previous implementation of section edit links will have to be adjusted to continue working; however, nothing else should break even if they are not updated in time.

Ideas to do this all the way to 2009 at least. It is often difficult to track which of several potential section edit links on the far right is associated with the correct section, and many readers and anonymous or new editors may even be failing to notice section edit links at all, since they read section titles, which are far away from the links.
