This template can be used to create an infobox for an article about a mountain pass. Other infoboxes can be embedded in this template, and it can be embedded in other infoboxes. For more information on these options, read Infobox Embedding.

These parameters can be used to create a fully functional infobox.

Parameter descriptions

ಬದಲಾಯಿಸಿ

This table describes most of the parameters available. See below for additional parameters. Only the name parameter must be assigned a value. Remember to reduce the width of photos and maps so that they do not inappropriately dominate the infobox.

Parameter Description
name Required. The name of the pass. It will be displayed at the top of the infobox. In most cases this should be the same as the article name less any disambiguation. For example if the article title is Lolo Pass (Idaho–Montana) then name=Lolo Pass.
other_name This parameter can be used to display the name in the local language or for an alternate English name if it is commonly used. Use a language template if the name is not English. For example: {{lang-fr|Ventour in Provençal}} → French: Ventour in Provençal.
photo The name of an image file to be displayed. No special formatting is needed.
photo_width Can be used to change the display width of the image. The default and maximum value is 280px. Images with a horizontal orientation (landscape mode) will generally display well at the default setting. An image with vertical orientation (portrait mode) may need to be adjusted to 180px or 220px. For example photo_width=200 and not photo_width=200px.
photo_alt Alt text for the photo, for visually impaired readers. See WP:ALT.
photo_caption A caption which will appear below the image if one is required.
map The name of the map to be displayed. See Map display methods below.
map_alt Alt text for the map. See WP:ALT.
map_caption A caption which will appear below the map if one is required.
map_relief This infobox will attempt to display a relief map if one is available. To force display of the default map image use |map_relief=0.
map_size Can change the display width of the map. The default and maximum width is 272px, but usually the map should be much smaller. For example map_size=200 and not map_size=200px.
x
y
Specifies the position of the location marker on some types of maps when the XY method for map display is used. The coordinates of the marker in pixels based on a map width of 1000 pixels. The template will scale these values for proper display. See below.
elevation The elevation of summit. Metres should be used first for all passes outside of the United States and feet for those within the U.S. For conversions, use elevation_m for metres to feet or elevation_ft for feet to metres.
elevation_ref Reference for the elevation using <ref>...</ref> tags. If elevation_m or elevation_ft was used, the reference must be supplied using this parameter.
traversed Any route which traverses the pass.
location The location of the pass. Don't be too precise. County, state and country are good in the USA. If the area is within a city specify the city, state and country. If the area is in multiple counties just list the state and country. For areas in other countries adjust accordingly.
range Mountain range if applicable. A subrange should be provided instead of any major mountain system unless there is no applicable subrange. For example, use Teton Range and not Rocky Mountains or Bernese Alps not Alps.
grid_ref_UK If the mountain pass is in Great Britain, the British grid reference. For locations outside of Great Britain, this field is not applicable and therefore should be removed if it is present.
grid_ref_Ireland If the mountain pass is in Ireland (whether Northern Ireland or the Republic), the Irish grid reference. For location outside Ireland, this field is not applicable and therefore should be removed if it is present.
coords For use with the {{Coords}} template. See below if a map is to be displayed. When using the {{coord}} template standard footnote syntax can be used.
topo The name of the topographic map showing the mountain. In Canada, this is usually the National Topographic System map number while for the USA, it's the map name from the USGS.

Display a marker on a map using a template and coordinates

ಬದಲಾಯಿಸಿ

A marker can be superimposed on a map using one of a set of map templates. This method requires the geographic coordinates to be entered using the parameters below and assigning map the name of the area covered by one of a set of location map templates. The parameters for this template map to a subset of the parameters for {{Location map}} and reading the documentation for that template might be helpful.

The coordinates and related information must be entered using the of parameters below. These parameters specify the same data as that used by the {{Coord}}.

Parameter Description
lat_d The degrees of latitude. This value can be specified as a decimal degree and when this format is used minutes and seconds should not be specified.
lat_m The minutes of latitude.
lat_s The seconds of latitude.
lat_NS N if north of the equator, S if south of the equator. Other values will be disregarded.
long_d The degrees of longitude. This value can be specified as a decimal degree and when this format is used minutes and seconds should not be specified.
long_m The minutes of longitude.
long_s The seconds of longitude.
long_EW E if East of the prime meridian, W if west of the prime meridian. Other values will be disregarded.
type Type is one way to specify the scale of maps generated by external map websites. See WP:COORD TYPE for valid values. The default value is pass. This parameter and the three below help GeoHack in selecting suitable map resources.
region A country code. See ISO 3166-2:US, ISO 3166-2 and ISO 3166-1 alpha-2. For example US-OR is the code for Oregon. This computer readable code is recommended. It will not be displayed. See WP:COORD REGION.
scale Determines the zoom factor for external-website maps. See WP:COORD SCALE. Using |scale=50000 will change the zoom factor to 1:50,000. Default value is 50000.
source Source of the coordinate data. See WP:COORD SOURCE. It will not be displayed.
format Determines the format used to the display coordinates. Valid values are dms for degrees, minutes and seconds, and dec for decimal degrees. The default is dms.
display Determines where the coordinates will be displayed. Valid values are inline and inline, title. The default is inline, title and is recommended.
coords_ref Must be used when citing the source of the coordinates when using the parameters above. Use <ref>...</ref> tags.

All of the names begin with the words "Location map" followed by the area covered. The value you need to assign to the parameter, map, is the area name. The map template for the for France is {{Location map Alps}}. In this case, specify map=Alps.

Display a marker on any map image

ಬದಲಾಯಿಸಿ

To display a marker on any map use the x and y parameters.

The values for the x and y parameters are the pixel coordinates of the location mark when the image is scaled to a width of 1000 pixels.

x is the pixel offset for the mark from the left edge of an image 1000px wide.
y is the pixel offset for the mark from the top edge of an image 1000px wide.

There are at least two ways of obtaining these values:

  1. Download the image from the image's file page to your computer. Open the image in a graphics editor, such as GIMP or XnView. Scale (resize) the image to a width of 1000px and then note the x, y coordinates when the mouse cursor points to the desired location. Use these values directly.
  2. Download the image from the image's file page to your computer. Open the image in any image viewer that displays the coordinates of the cursor position, such as Paint from Microsoft. Note the X, Y coordinates when the mouse cursor points to the location. Then:
1000 · x'/w = x  and  1000 · y'/w = y
where x' and y' are the mouse cursor coordinates, w is the width of the image displayed on your computer and x and y are the values to assign to the x and y parameters.

These computed coordinates are relative and will work even if the width of the image displayed in an article is changed by another user. Using simple pixel coordinate values would not have this advantage. Note that Wikipedia does not allow the aspect ratio of an image to be altered.

In the example below, the marker is 74.2% of the way across the map from the left side and 20.2% of the way down from the top, so x=742 and y=202.
