Sometimes, taxonomy is not as simple as we might like, and a taxobox needs to contain more information than just ranks and taxon names. A few unusual cases are described here; if there's something more complex that you can't figure out, do ask at Template talk:Automatic taxobox.

Questionable assignments

Sometimes, we simply don't know the relationships of a taxon, even if we can guess.

Example output
Phylum:	Arthropoda
Class:	incertae sedis
Genus:	Skania

Incertae sedis

• Skania is definitely an arthropod, but its relationship to other arthropods is unknown. To use the technical term, it is "incertae sedis".
• Therefore, at Template:Taxonomy/Skania, we set |parent=Incertae sedis/Arthropoda.
• Press "Preview" before saving. If Template:Taxonomy/Incertae sedis/Arthropoda does not yet exist, a link will walk you through how to create it.

Order:	Radiodonta
Family:	Anomalocarididae (?)
Genus:	Pambdeleurion

Uncertain assignment

• Pambdelurion might belong to the family Anomalocarididae: but this is questionable.
• To indicate this, head to Template:Taxonomy/Pambdelurion, set |parent=Anomalocarididae/?, and press "Preview".
• If Template:Taxonomy/Anomalocarididae/? does not yet exist, a link will walk you through how to create it.

Uncertain assignment (two levels)

• Tortilicaulis probably belongs to the class Horneophytopsida within the clade Polysporangiophyta, but cannot be assigned to either with certainty.
• To indicate this, head to Template:Taxonomy/Tortilicaulis, set |parent=Horneophytopsida/?/?, and press "Preview".
• If Template:Taxonomy/Horneophytopsida/?/? or Template:Taxonomy/Polysporangiophyta/? do not yet exist, links will walk you through how to create them.

Extinct taxa

Example output

If Velociraptor is extinct, then add the line extinct=yes to Template:Taxonomy/Velociraptor.

Paraphyly

Example: Porifera
Kingdom:	Animalia
Phylum*:	"Porifera"
Class:	Some sponge class

A paraphyletic group is one that contains some, but not all, of its descendants. For instance, although birds evolved from theropod dinosaurs, they are not usually included in the term "Dinosaur". The scientific convention is to use ""s to denote a paraphyletic group: so if I wanted to use "Dinosaur" as a paraphyletic taxon, I would go to Template:Taxonomy/Dinosauria and set link=Dinosaur|"Dinosauria". When "Dinosauria" showed up in the taxobox of Velociraptor, it would be clear that the term was paraphyletic.
