Both parameters are optional, and are intended for cases where the Wikisource category name is different from the Wikipedia page name. The first parameter is the name of the corresponding category on the Wikisource, ''without'' the <ttcode>Category:</ttcode> prefix. If this first parameter is used, then the template will display the Wikisource category name, which may be confusing to readers. This text can be replaced by the second parameter, where the Wikipedia page name would typically be used.
 
For example, on the [[Polar bear]] page,
:<ttcode><nowiki>{{Wikisource cat|Ursus maritimus|Polar bears}}</nowiki></ttcode>
produces a link to [[Wikisource:Category:Ursus maritimus]] displayed as [[Wikisource:Category:Ursus maritimus|Polar bears]].
